Artes, combo routes and TP costs
Every base arte fires from a short D-pad motion plus one attack button; arcane artes unlock by using the base arte often enough, not by levelling.
Every character in Tales of Eternia Remastered learns two kinds of attacks: base artes that fire from a D-pad motion, and a longer list that unlocks through use. Knowing which is which saves a lot of wasted TP.

How artes unlock
Base artes are learned from a combo command — a short directional motion followed by an attack button. You do not buy them and you do not get them from levels. What levels and weapon use do give you is the second tier: an arcane arte appears automatically once its base arte has been used enough times, and it is usually the reason to keep a weaker arte in your rotation.
The practical loop is: pick up every new base arte the moment the motion is available, use the ones you want to upgrade far more often than you want to, and check the arte list every few hours to see what has evolved.
Elemental attributes matter more than raw damage
Artes carry elemental attributes, and every boss in the game has at least one. Two rules cover almost every fight:
- Match the element the boss is weak to. A weaker attack of the right element beats a stronger one of the wrong element.
- Never lean on the element the boss nullifies. Several Greater Craymels resist their own element completely, so a "themed" party is often the worst possible party.
Representative base artes by character
| Character | Weapon | Typical base arte payoff | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reid | Sword | Fast multi-hit sword artes that stagger | Best combo filler in the game |
| Farah | Knuckles | Short-range burst with high hit counts | Brings her own recovery artes |
| Keele | Rod | Mid-tier elemental Craymel artes | Highest single-hit damage in the party |
| Meredy | Whistle | Celestian-element Craymel artes | Covers what Keele does not |
| Max | Craymel Gun | Multi-element ranged attacks | Easiest character to bring to a new boss |
| Chat | Bag | Utility and disruption artes | Lowest raw damage, highest flexibility |
TP costs and when to hold back
Base artes are cheap and spammable. Arcane artes and the big Craymel artes cost multiples of that, and TP regenerates slowly enough that you will notice. The discipline that works:
- Trash fights: base artes only, and only the two cheapest in your rotation.
- Elite fights: one arcane arte into a cast, then back to base artes while TP recovers.
- Bosses: open with the element the boss is weak to, then rotate cheap artes so you always have TP for a heal.
Craymel artes are a separate list
Spells cast from a Craymel Cage are not the same list as your character's physical artes. They are gated by which Greater Craymels you have sealed, cost TP like everything else, and are subject to the one-spell-at-a-time rule. The full breakdown of which Craymel gives which element is on the Melnics and Craymel artes page.
