Chat: pilot of the Van Eltia

Quick answer

Chat is recruited after Gnome's Cavern and her ship becomes the main way to cross between Inferia and Celestia, so she is a story-critical pick as well as a fighter.

Chat is twelve years old, a self-declared descendant of the legendary pirate Aifread, and the pilot of the ship that makes the second half of the game possible.

What she is for

Chat is the party's utility character. Her weapon is a bag, which reads as a joke until you realise it gives her access to a wider range of effects than any other physical fighter: attacks, disruptions and support in one kit. Her raw damage is the lowest on the roster, and that is the trade.

Her real importance is the Van Eltia. Once she joins, the party has a ship, and travelling between Inferia and Celestia stops being a one-way plot event and becomes something you can just do.

How to use her

  • Use her for what the party is missing. If a fight needs a second disruption rather than a second attacker, Chat is the slot.
  • Keep the melee characters in front. Her durability is low even by the standards of a twelve-year-old pirate captain.
  • Do not expect damage numbers. She is a support pick in an active party that is otherwise physical.

Equipment priorities

  • Bag upgrades last, after Reid, Farah and a caster are equipped. Hers is the lowest-impact weapon slot in the party.
  • Accessories that boost utility or survivability rather than attack.
  • A resistance ring for the lair you are entering, which for her is closer to mandatory than optional.

Her role in the story

Chat's recruitment is one of the game's better set pieces: the party is knocked out with sleeping gas, forced to navigate seven basements using rubber ducks, and then congratulated on escaping by the child who designed the trap. She then explains that she needs crew for her ship and simply hires the party.

She is also the game's link to Aifread, the legendary pirate whose seven treasures are a recurring optional objective across the world. The treasures are worth collecting: several of them have practical uses, and one of them gates an item that matters in the post-game.
